When it comes to kids and crafts, there is no such thing as too much. When kids spend as much time as they do focused on electronics and the internet, daily or weekly craft time can be just the thing they need to get those brain cells working. Some kids gravitate naturally into the craft environment and have plenty to bring to the table. Others may be slower to excite and need some prodding. However, all kids can benefit from crafts and time spent in creative thought.
Start crafts by planning out ahead of time what you’d like to do. This will eliminate any humming and hawing that can occur if you pick something and find that you do not have the required tools or materials needed. By planning crafts in advance you are able to prepare by stopping in at craft stores for supplies. Keep your options open by staying organized. If you have more than one child in the family, have them take turns deciding on future projects that can be done together as a group.
Use recyclables for making crafts and art projects. It’s a great way to teach your kids about reusing items commonly found around the house. Everything from margarine containers to old compact discs makes great craft materials. Keep things like this on hand to get kids thinking. It can be a fun challenge to discover all of the things you can make out of just one item. Put your imagination to the test and see how many uses you can come up with for a plastic container or empty pop bottle.
Crafts should always be developed with full consideration of the child in mind. Crafts that do not fit the skill level or age learning level of the child can be a challenge and result in being little to no fun. If you have children of all ages wishing to participate in crafts, allow them to be original and come up with something on their own. Quite often kids simply need the materials and the rest comes together on its own. Kids do get frustrated easily though so keep an eye on them as they work. It’s best not to leave children unattended while working with craft materials like glue and scissors.
It’s important to stay open minded and be flexible. Kids are not generally perfectionists and do not mind if little things are not perfectly done. Don’t be too concerned with things like perfect lines and cuts or messiness. Crafts are messy at times and if you are going to conduct them then accept all that goes with them. Applying too much pressure to kids during craft time may result in them not wanting to participate any longer.
The most important thing about craft making is that kids learn through playing and being imaginative. Encouraging these gifts will strengthen them in growth. Allow kids to express themselves while learning. There is no greater gift. Craft time can be a positive experience for everyone so get Mom and Dad involved too.
There are as many hobbies as there are people who enjoy them. Learn more about the popular hobby of building and collecting dollhouses and miniatures. Visit our large selection of collectible doll houses today at http://www.TheMagicalDollhouse.com.

Most people in the world have heard of Pompeii, Italy, the site of one of the worst natural disasters of ancient times. One of the greatest finds in the history of the city was made in July, 2005, when an archaeologist checking on the progress of a new motorway being built in the area dug up the remains of a man lying next into an ancient Roman basket containing silverware. While the silverware and numerous articles such as pottery and paintings have been commonly found amongst the ruins, this was on of the few times that a Roman basket had been unearthed, although the container and its contents were somewhat melted together.
To understand the significance of this find, you must first understand what happened in Pompeii on August 24, 79 A.D. The city was a busy seaport and a summer resort area for wealthy Romans who wished to get away from the demands of living in Rome itself and was located at the base of Mount Vesuvius, an active yet mostly quiet volcano. Estimations of the population at the time of the disaster vary, although most experts agree that thee probably approximately 20,000 people living in the area at the time. In the past few years, earthquakes were a common occurrence, so when the ground began to shake on that fateful August day, most of the residence ignored it (much as Californians do today). Suddenly, Vesuvius awoke and began to erupt.
The people became panicked as they tried to reach safety. While many fled to the seaport, others took their chances trying to journey overland. Still other individuals sought shelter within their homes, not realizing that they would remain there through eternity. The high intensity heat and the amount of ash in the air soon eliminated anyone who had remained in the area.
The volcano eventually buried the town with layers of ash and pumice, where it remained buried for 1700 years, until it was rediscovered in 1748 and excavation was begun. The buildings were the first to be exposed, as well as statues, fountains, and gardens. As the archaeologists began to explore deeper into the structures and streets, they began to uncover the heartbreaking remains of the residents of this ancient city, laying sprawled face down or, as in one case, appearing to be sitting and praying. It seems that the ash had formed a casing around the individuals that had been buried in the eruption. Although their remains had long since decomposed, the outlines of their bodies were still visible, some of these even showing the looks of suffering that was apparent on these poor souls’ faces.
As well as finding the inhabitants’ bodies, the archaeologists found a treasure trove of daily utensils and household items that could give them an idea of what daily life was like 2000 years ago. Most of the artifacts that remained were made of metal, marble or other materials that could easily withstand the heat of the molten lava that was exuding from Vesuvius.
It is for this reason that the Roman wicker basket that was found was so exciting. It would seem that the man who was found lying next to it was trying to escape Pompeii’s devastation and had crawled underneath a stairwell with his valuables. The sheltered design of this area helped to protect the basket from being destroyed. Although it is not in perfect shape, the archaeologists are treating the fibers with different chemicals to preserve that material that it was made of, with the hopes of displaying this rare container with the rest of the Pompeii exhibit in the near future.
Pompeii is one of the largest tourist attractions in all of Italy. If you wish to get a peek into the lives of ancient Romans as well as to experience the emotional aspects of the disaster, it is a trip that you will not soon forget.

When deciding what kind of tattoo to put on your body, it’s important to remember that the symbol will remain for the rest of your life. Choose something that is beautiful, represents what you believe in, and is a design you won’t be ashamed for the world to see when you’re in a bathing suit. An angel tattoo fits all of these characteristics, so it isn’t surprising that these are some of the most popular tattoos out there. On a typical day at the beach, it’s not uncommon to see a substantial number of people with some kind of angel tattoo prominently displayed.
Traditionally, angels were entirely a religious symbol. In the stories of the bible, these heavenly creatures were sent down by God to transmit messages to mere mortals on Earth. Their actions and words could be both positive and negative-they were capable of good and bad.
Some of the millions of people who sport angel tattoos today reflect something of that original biblical sentiment, but many others simply like the design. Angels have come to represent something separate from religion. As a symbol, the angel is an overwhelmingly positive life force, and many people are excited to display this measure of happiness in the form of a tattoo somewhere on the body.
Many people also get angel tattoos placed on their body to commemorate the loss of a loved one. These tattoos are sometimes accompanied by “R.I.P.”, short for rest in peace. It’s also commonplace to see initials somewhere in the vicinity of the angel tattoo. The symbolism of this kind of angel tattoo is that the loved one is looking down from heaven, protecting those he cares about from above. With all of the uncertainty in the world, who couldn’t use a guardian angel?
The majority of angel tattoos appear on female’s bodies. There’s something inherently sexy about the angel. Perhaps it’s the possibility of sin; after all, Satan was nothing more than a fallen angel. Angels, therefore, represent the possibilities of straying to the dark side.
Today, there are a large number of different forms and styles of angel tattoos. In fact, there really is no limit to what an angel tattoo can look like. While some take the definite form of an old-school seraph from the bible, others are much more abstract. The typical “traditional” angel is beautifully suffused in light, wearing a white robe, and floating majestically on top of a cloud.
Another popular version of this tattoo is the “angel tattoo wings”, splayed across the entire back of the subject. These seem to flex like wings when the shoulder muscles are contracted. This way, you can really bring your tattoo to life.
It’s up to you to decide which style best suits your personality and taste. Angels represent quite a broad spectrum, and you can use them to express an enormous breadth of opinions and sentiments. Whichever design you decide on, you’ll enjoy the benefits of having a sexy, strong symbol adorning your body.
There are so many different tattoos to choose from. Everything from cross tattoos to star tattoos. Whatever you choose, your tattoo design should hold some sort of meaning for you. Get meanings here: http://www.protattoodesigns.com/

One of the master basket weavers of the Pomo Native American Tribe was Elsie Allen, the author of a number of how-to books in the art of Pomo basket weaving. She worked to preserve this art form that defines her people and Elsie’s descendants carry on that legacy today.
Born in 1899, Elsie was raised by her grandmother in the Cloverdale area of northern California. The young girl learned the art of Pomo basket weaving from her mother, Annie Burke, and her grandmother, Nellie Burke, as well as a number of other older Pomo women that congregated at the family home. These women spent hours weaving these items, which were given as gifts, sold, or kept as heirlooms.
At the age of eleven, Elsie Allen was captured by government authorities, who packed her off to a boarding school to learn the English language and American ways. She continued to practice her basket weaving craft while she was away to ensure that she would not forget the techniques that were taught to her by her family and people.
Elsie returned to her family as a young woman and took up weaving with her family right where she had left off. Once she had married, Elsie had to work a variety of jobs, such as a domestic and a farm laborer, which left her very little time to practice the craft that she loved. It was at this point that her mother Annie began to train Elsie’s children in this ancient craft.
An interesting tradition among the Pomo basket weavers included the burial of their baskets and weaving equipment and tools with them when they died. Annie begged Elsie to ignore this tradition as she wanted her daughter to have these items when she could begin her own basket weaving craft again. Upon Annie’s death, Elsie retained all these valuable artifacts and kept her promise to her mother.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Elsie Allen organized the Pomo basket weavers and began to write books describing the steps that are used in making these extraordinary items. The money raised from her writings and the baskets that the weavers sold was used to help Pomo families in distress, to set up Native American college scholarships, and to finance a large lawsuit on behalf of the Pomo tribe.
Elsie Allen also served as a Pomo activist, fighting for the reclamation of Native American land and struggling to establish equal rights for her people in a very biased 1950s California. She also began to teach Pomo basket weaving to anyone who wanted to learn, regardless of race. As many of her students were white women, her own people began to criticize her as undermining their way of life.
In 1972, Elsie wrote of her disappointment in her attempts to pass on the Pomo basket weaving craft. Very few of her students at this point were Native Americans, although the attention that her classes drew from universities did help the Pomo people to be accepted by the general population.
In 1980, Elsie Allen finally found an apprentice that could learn and pass on the art of Pomo basket weaving in the form of her great-niece, Susie Billy. This niece continues to teach Pomo basket weaving classes and has served as a collaborator on several books detailing this art form.
In 1990, upon Elsie Allen’s death, the collection of baskets and tools that belonged to Annie Burke as well as items that were added by Elsie passed on to Elsie’s oldest daughter, Genevieve Allen Aguilar. Genevieve has placed this valuable collection of Pomo artifacts on a long-term loan to The Mendocino County Museum, where the works of these incredible women can still be viewed.

A unique type of basket that may be a nice gift for any basket lover would be an authentic English willow basket. One of the leading manufacturers of these types of baskets is P.H. Coate & Son, located at the Willows and Wetlands Visitor Centre, located in Somerset, England.
This family-owned business was founded in 1819 by Robert Coate, a local willow grower and merchant. In 1940, another well known willow grower and furniture maker named Edmund Boobyer had a daughter, Katherine who married Percy Coate and the present company was created.
The company is located in an area that is known as the Somerset Levels. This most important wetland in the United Kingdom is ideal growing ground for willow, the key ingredient in the P. H. Coate baskets. As a matter of fact, this area is the only location that this willow is still cultivated to make baskets, furniture, garden items, and artists’ charcoal.
This willow, which is called “withies” by the locals, is grown between May and October, during which time the stalks of this plant can grow as high as eight feet. New plants are planted in the spring from the stalks that were harvested the previous season. The new plants will not be ready for three years, but once the plants have reached maturity, they have a lifetime of approximately thirty years.
Once harvested, a team of highly trained specialists at the P.H. Coate Company weave it into beautifully crafted homemade willow baskets. The combined experience of this team equals 180 years.
As mentioned earlier, the P.H. Coate Company is located in the Coates Willows & Wetlands Centre, a successful tourist attraction that was started in 1987 by David Bellamy. One of the many attractions that are available on a tour of the Centre is the Video Room. Here visitors are able to watch a video that depicts the process of willow harvesting and the company’s efforts to keep many of its traditions while implementing some new strategies for the future.
The Basket Museum allows the visitor to view a large display of willow artifacts, ranging from the common to the unusual. The Levels and Moors Exhibition displays items dealing with the basket weaving tradition of the P. H. Coate & Son and also highlights the wonderful history of the Somerset Levels area. The Environmental Interpretation display deals with the effect that the water that is present in the wetlands has had in shaping the lives of the people who live there.
There are also guided tours that are available during the day that allows visitors to see the making of these baskets in progress. The knowledgeable guides can explain the techniques in great detail and are also able to answer any questions that a visitor may have.
The Centre also has the Shop& Furniture Gallery, which displays a variety of willow baskets and furniture that is on hand to purchase. If you want a custom-made basket, this service is also available. Do-it-yourself kits can be bought here as well.
Other attractions in the Coates Willows and Wetlands Visitor Centre include the Courtyard Tea Room, where visitors can enjoy a light lunch in a courtyard that has a rushing water feature. There is also several walk areas available that travel through the lovely moors that surround the area of Somerset.
For the basket enthusiast, a trip to the P. H. Coates Company as well as the Visitor Centre is an experience not to be missed.

If you are a basket enthusiast, you might be interested in taking a trip to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts to visit the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum. This establishment preserves the history and culture of the Nantucket basket weaving heritage.
Although the early Indians of Nantucket Island had long weaved wooden splint baskets for storage and to gather crops from the fields, this style of basket weaving was adopted by sailors aboard the Nantucket lightships (hence, the name). Beginning in 1854, these lightships were sea vessels that served as on-sea lighthouses, anchoring along the shoals and ledges along the Nantucket coastline that could prove to be disastrous for larger vessels. Being stuck on these ships for tours that could last up to eighteen months, the crewmen that manned these stationery vessels took up this form of basket weaving as a way to pass the time as well as using this talent to earn extra money. The last lightship was retired in 1973, although the basket weaving trade that was done by the crews of these ships ended much earlier, in the beginning of the twentieth century.
These Nantucket lighthouse baskets were originally made of a variety of different materials while rattan (split cane), that was imported from the South Pacific, was utilized only to repair these items. The sailors soon began to use this material for most of the basket, using different materials for the bottom boards, the rims, and the handles. There are no known “sets” of these baskets that were designed before 1860.
Beginning in the late 19th century, the Nantucket lighthouse baskets had become a flourishing trade. Some of the best basket makers during this era included Captain Charles Ray, Davis Hall, William Appleton, Captain Andrew J. Sandsbury, Captain James Wyer, and George Washington Ray. These men charged $1.50 for smaller baskets and $50.00 for a set of eight, which was extremely good money at this period of time.
After 1900, the sailors ceased to weave these homemade baskets, although people living on the island soon picked up the trade. Men such as Clinton Ray and A. D. Williams built up successful basket weaving businesses. In the late 1940’s, Jose Formoso Reyes designed a cane basket that included a carved ivory whale on top and the “Friendship Basket “was born. Originally sold for $15.00, these baskets are the basis for the Nantucket lightship baskets that are available today.
The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum was formed after a successful exhibit of these historical baskets and was funded by all of the Nantucket basket weavers as a way to preserve and pass on the heritage of their craft. Situated in an older home on the island, the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum has many of the original baskets that were weaved by these hardy men so many years ago. The establishment also has a gift shop where you can purchase baskets designed in the original style. It also offers classes for youngsters between the ages of eleven and sixteen as a way to keep this basket weaving tradition alive. These tutorials are free thanks to funding from the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation, although there is a $50 charge for supplies.
If you are interested in basket weaving that is rich in tradition and history, a visit to the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum may well be worth your while. The building is located at 49 Union Street and you can contact the museum by calling 508-228-1177.

Brief History of Figurines:
Figurines or statues have been made by humans since the dawn of time. Ancient civilizations made figurines and statues of everything they could, from their kings to common people and from animals to a representation of their deity. These were made from materials that were readily available to the artisan, such as stone, wood or clay. As time went on and other materials were invented they too were used, things like porcelain, glass, metals and resin. Many of these ancient figurines can be seen in museums around the world. Today figurines are most often made of porcelain, glass, acrylic or a resin. These are found in homes, business, churches and in government offices. They are used as decorations, for religious observance, inspiration or to help us remember special events or people.

Polyester used to be a staple of the workplace. Companies that made employees wear uniforms seemed to go with the ugliest things they could find. Then, polyester was replaced with a simple t-shirt. T-shirts do not do the organization any favors. They cause the company to look bad in general. To give more class to uniforms, many companies are choosing to use embroidered shirts. These items offer elegant style that is lacking in many other uniforms.
This uniform choice allows workers to look much more dressed up than the other available options. They can come in long sleeves or short sleeves, so no matter what the climate is, they make a good choice. They add to the looks of the establishment. When employees are dressed nicely, customers recognize that. They automatically think better about the establishment as a whole.
Embroidered shirts also allow employees to feel better about their job. The professional atmosphere helps them feel that their job is important. Many people say that looking good helps people to feel good, and that is the truth. A good look adds to the self esteem of employees and creates a better all around performance. This is something that will greatly benefit employers.
A nice looking uniform is also great advertisement for the company. A business can put the information that they want on the uniform, and their employees can then represent the business. As one of the leading manufacturers of hand crafted wooden baskets, Peterboro Basket Company has established a reputation of high quality among basket enthusiasts. The company is located in Peterborough, New Hampshire and has been in business for over one hundred and fifty years.
One of the founders of this company was Amzi Childs who came originally from Deerfield, Massachusetts. He arrived in Peterborough in 1841 to manufacture lead pipe. Meanwhile, a man by the name of Moses Chapman had erected a building in 1830 that served as a wheelwright shop. Along with a man named Asa Henry, Childs began to weave baskets in the wheelwright shop from 1851 until 1891. In that year, the basket business burned, and was later sold to the McLane Basket Factory that was located in Milford. The Peterborough business was moved there as well.
One of the foremen at Child’s factory was named Henry B. Needham. He had worked at the plant for fifteen years when the fateful fire occurred. After the business was moved to Milford, Needham established his own basket business, the Needham Basket Factory, in Peterborough in part of the White Machine Shop. Two years later, in 1893, Needham built a new building of his own.
His business began to boom, and in 1916 his business was incorporated and became the H.B. Needham Basket Company. In 1920, this company was reorganized to build a new building and was reunited with the Milford company. In 1926, tragedy struck for a second time as the new building of the H. B. Needham Basket Company also burned. The company was reorganized again, and became the present day Peterboro Basket Company.
Today, the business is still family owned and operated, and employs a large number of Peterborough’s Cambodian population. The company also has the Peterboro Factory Outlet Store that is housed at the same site that the manufacturing facility is. Inside, a team of artisans craft these homemade baskets with the same care that Amzi Childs did. Unlike other basket companies such as the Longaberger Basket Company, the Peterboro Basket Company does not offer tours of their facility due to insurance requirements. The company does, however, offer a video that shows the process in which these baskets are made.
The Peterboro Basket Company offers a variety of baskets for every occasion. Their most popular items include a beautiful knitting basket. This item has a lid and solid legs built onto the bottom that allows you to set these baskets anywhere that you are planning to work. Measuring 17”L x 11 ?”W x 13”H and costing $59.95, this basket can be a useful addition to any household.
Another popular item that is available from the Peterboro Basket Company is the Peterboro Traditional Magazine / Storage basket. This model also has two legs that are on the bottom that are crafted from Appalachian White Ash. Anyone who is interested in baskets has probably heard of the Longaberger Company, a leader in the manufacture of handcrafted baskets. Started by J. W. Longaberger and carried on by his granddaughters Tami and Rachel, the company makes maple wood baskets that are a must-have item for any basket collection.
J. W. Longaberger started his career as an apprentice basket maker in 1919 at the Dresden Basket Company that was located in Dresden, Ohio. During the Depression of the 1930s, the factory closed, but J. W. continued his craft from home. He and his wife Bonnie Jean eventually saved enough money to buy the old building, and Longaberger baskets came into existence.
The company itself was started by Dave Longaberger, J. W.’s son, who ran it until his death. It was Dave’s idea to make the corporate headquarters something that people would remember. When driving down State Route 16 in Newark, Ohio, people are amazed to see a huge building that is shaped like a Longaberger Medium Market Basket. Dave had planned to have all the company buildings built in this style, but died before any of the others were started. His daughters, Tami and Rachel, decided against the unconventional architecture.
Longaberger baskets have long been sold by representatives at home, much like Avon and Tupperware. While sales were high in the 1980s and 1990s, they have recently declined. Plans are underway to begin selling these baskets online.
As well as basket making, the Longaberger Company has become a popular tourist spot. When traveling in the area, you can visit the Longaberger Homestead and Basket making Campus, which is located in Frazeysburg, Ohio. You can take a tour of the company itself as well as shopping at the Longaberger Factory Store. There is also a workshop that will allow you to make your own basket. Throughout the summer months, there are two celebrations that the company sponsors. One is the American Summer Celebration that is held in early June. The 4th of July celebrations are impressive as well.
The company also owns the Longaberger Golf Club, which is one of the top golf courses in the country. Due to its location in the hills of southeastern Ohio, this course can prove to be challenging to the most avid golf enthusiast.
You can also tour the headquarters of Longaberger, “The Great Basket” itself. The building is seven stories high and the offices are designed around an atrium that is 30,000 square feet. The Basket handles have replica copper and wooden rivets and are heated to prevent ice from forming on them during the Ohio winters. The Basket even has two Longaberger tags on the side of it, each measuring 25’long and 7’ tall. Weighing 725 lbs. a piece, these tags are 3’ thick and can stand up to the ravages of time.
If you are a basket enthusiast and have a couple days to spare, you should plan a trip to the Longaberger Factory. It is an experience that you will not soon forget.
